High school teachers and students from across Europe are invited to apply for the upcoming edition of "Sound in the Silence." In October 2026, we will meet in the Basque Country, Spain, to explore the history of Gernika, a symbol of peace and resilience through the lens of contemporary art.
About the Project
“Sound in the Silence” is an intercultural and international remembrance project designed for youth. It bridges the gap between historical education and artistic expression. Participants visit memorial sites marked by the difficult history of the 20th century and, under the guidance of professional artists, transform their reflections into a final performance using dance, theater, creative writing, and sound.

Theme of the 2026 Edition: the bombing of Gernika and the Spanish Civil War
The 2026 edition will take place in Gernika (Basque Country, Spain). Known globally through Picasso’s masterpiece, Gernika is a site of profound historical significance. On April 26, 1937, the town was devastated by an aerial bombing during the Spanish Civil War, becoming a tragic precursor to the total war of WWII. Today, Gernika serves as a powerful symbol of the struggle for peace and the preservation of human rights.
Working with the Gernika Peace Museum, the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM), and the Fundació Solidaritat UB, participants will:
Explore the history of the bombing and its impact on the civilian population.
Reflect on the concepts of peace, memory, and reconciliation.
Connect the lessons of the past with contemporary challenges in Europe.
