1941-1944. The Second World War. Romania on Germany’s side

On 22 June 1941 Romania joined Germany and its allies in the attack against the Soviet Union. Romania’s main objective was the liberation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina which had been annexed by the USSR through the 1940 ultimatum. Participation to the war in the East led to extensive loss of life both on the front and at home following Anglo-American air raids. On 23 August 1944 Marshal Ion Antonescu was removed from power and arrested and Romania withdrew from the war against the allied nations.
