1 August – 3 October: Warsaw Uprising
Throughout the Soviet and German occupation, the Poles were fighting the invaders by taking part in the underground resistance movement (initially the Union of Armed Struggle, later the Home Army). Self-defence was organised and citizens were being prepared for future struggle. Armed operations came with time, too. There were executions of German war criminals. In 1944, the HA staged the Warsaw Uprising against the Germans where more than 40,000 soldiers fought for two months.
