1 September: Slovakia enters the war
Supporting the Wehrmacht and taking German command, the Slovak Army attacked Polish (1939) and Soviet territory (1941). In fact, the war destroyed the traditional pillar of Slovak policy. Germany rewarded Slovakia for its participation by returning areas occupied by Poland in 1920, 1924 and 1938. But this was very weak compensation compared to the land still occupied by Hungary. Slovaks also fought against the Nazis: in Poland and during the war on various territories and fronts.
