Cleveland Agreement, 22 October 1915

The umbrella organisation of Slovaks in the USA (the Slovak League) in October 1915 in Cleveland signed an agreement with representatives of the American Czechs on a joint programme: the future unification of both nations in a federal union. Slovaks living abroad used war-related events as an opportunity that in favourable circumstances could help the entire nation emancipate from national suppression. Various streams of Slovak foreign and domestic resistance against the state were gradually organised with a shared objective: to destroy Austria-Hungary.
