23 August 1944. Its internal and external consequences

The disastrous results of Romania’s participation in the anti-Soviet war created a deep feeling of discontent within the country. Corroborated with external pressures, this led to the overthrow of the Antonescu regime through the coup d’état of 23 August 1944. This act was followed by Romania joining the coalition of the Allies in the anti-Nazi war. At the same time, however, Romania was occupied by the Red Army, which became the main tool for turning the country into a Soviet satellite.
