2 June: The death of the student Benno Ohnesorg
When a Grand coalition from the CDU and SPD formed government, the ‘Extra-Parliamentary Opposition’ (APO) emerged. Students and intellectuals gathered under its banner to protest against societal issues. The murder of Benno Ohnesorg at a demonstration against the state visit of the Shah of Iran led to the radicalisation of the APO. The shooter, Police Inspector Kurras, had previously been an informant for many years for the GDR Ministry for State Security (Stasi).
