Start of renewal process

After the January party leadership session, the communists started to implement steps towards liberalisation by which they wanted to reform communist socialism as ‘socialism with a human face.’ Humanism was to connect socialism with democracy and state planning with the open market. Most of Slovak society wanted these changes and thus caused problems between the Slovaks and Czechs. However, the attempted reform of socialism came when Soviet bloc regimes were blocking any changes.
