Armistice in Compiègne

Having sealed their victory over Russia, the Central Powers had to capitulate on the western and southern fronts as the US had joined the war on the Entente’s side and Germany and Austro-Hungary exhausted their resources. The breakup of the Habsburg monarchy and Germany’s capitulation were accompanied by the collapse of the governance practiced until then. Despite the Compiègne armistice of November 1918 war operations continued for another four years in different regions of Eastern Europe.
