Expansion of NATO

Key to the security of Central and Eastern-European states was the inclusion of most of them in NATO and the European Union at the turn of the century. That process, however, took place against the background of many other events that were key to the international system, such as a new wave of democratisation, growing role of China and Muslim states and the threat of terrorism emanating from the latter.
