The Last Soviet Soldier Leaves Hungary’s Territory
All of the opposition parties in Hungary regarded the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the country as a basic goal. At the beginning of 1990, negotiations were begun with the Soviet Union under the supervision of the opposition parties. In the space of approximately eighteen months, the Soviets withdrew all of their troops from Hungary. The last Soviet soldier left the country on June 19 1991. Also in 1991, the Warsaw Pact was disbanded, as it had lost its essential function and purpose.
