The Hungarian Revolution Breaks Out in Budapest

A crowd of several hundred thousand people joined university students who were holding a peaceful protest of government measures. Some of the protesters tried to proclaim their demands at the building of the Hungarian Radio, where armed fighting broke out. The Soviet forces that intervened were met with armed resistance. The revolution broke out, and soon the Stalinist party state collapsed. Imre Nagy announced the restoration of a multiparty system and demanded the withdrawal of Soviet troops.
