Many famous composers such as Dmitri Shostakovich, Mieczysław Weinberg and Krzysztof Penderecki have dedicated their music to incisive historical events. Often, this music is based on written documents or personal experience. Some composers celebrated great events in history in their music, whereas others dared to bring unspoken or banned memories to light. No matter what the underlying cause was, their music always stirred the public and led either to great success, scathing criticism or even a ban on performance. One thing is for sure: No listener of commemorating music has ever remained untouched.
