Poles fight on the fronts of the Second World War 1939-1945
During the Second World War, thousands of Poles were fighting on various fronts, volunteering as members of Polish military units. Polish soldiers took an active part in defence combat in France, the air Battle of Britain, fights for Tobruk and the Italian front in the victorious yet extremely hard battle for the mountain and monastery of Monte Cassino. The USSR also set up a Polish military unit sending the Poles to the front in, inter alia, the battle of Lenino and then the march on Berlin.
