28 October: Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt leads the first social-liberal coalition
The election of Chancellor Willy Brandt sees Germany’s first Social Democrat head of government. In collaboration with liberal coalition partner FDP, Brandt wants to restructure the Federal Republic of Germany. In his first government speech, Brandt promises to ‘dare to achieve more democracy’. The subsequent opening of society is accompanied by an education campaign, increasing people’s chances of social advancement. The ‘New Eastern Policy’ should also improve the relationship with the GDR.
